There are two options available for adding site URL to directories. You can either manually submit your URL or use submission software.

Automatic submission though could save you some time but it doesn’t usually do a thorough job. The common problem associated with auto submission of URL is duplication of advertisement in web directories and you know search engines don’t like duplication of content, in this case links.
Moreover, to maximize the power of web directories you have to make some differences in your site description with different web directories and play with your keyword using variances of it. If not you could be penalized.
Manual Submission of URL
If you manually submit your URL to directories, you can ensure accuracy. You can control the process using the right keyword and description you want to use.
It is not about quantity though quantity matters because the more site your add your URL to, the more links you get. But all your hard work could lead to nothing when your site is removed from search engine listings because of too much duplication of content and keyword.
So even if it is just 20 sites you can submit to, you would be happy knowing that it was properly done and you would get some good quality links from it

Site name/Title requires you to enter either the name of your site or its title. Note that below it, it says anchor text. It means that whatever you enter there will appear as anchor text. And remember what I said about quality link building, anchor text links has more weigh in search engine rankings. Meaning the more site that link to you with a keyword anchor text like ‘blogging’ the higher your chance of ranking for it
So instead of entering the name of your site or its title, enter the keyword you want to get ranked for.
Then give a little description of your site putting your keyword into consideration but not over doing it.
Use variations of your keyword when filling out web directory forms. There are two benefits in doing this, first is that you can get ranked for all the variations. Second is that search engines do not see you as spamming your keyword and penalize you
So think properly about your keyword before filling out that site name/title
Before adding your URL to a directory, check the page rank to be sure it’s worth the trouble. A site popularity is shown by it page rank, the higher it page rank, the higher the number of it daily visitors and the more people your URL will be exposed to.
When choosing a category for your URL you want to be patient enough to go through all the categories and be sure of the one that fits well with your site else you risk losing targeted visitors to your site
If there is no category that fits well with your site on a particular directory it is better to ignore that directory and move to another instead of choosing a category that doesn’t fit well with what your site is about and attract the wrong visitors to your site
After all there are thousands of web directories to pick from.
