SEO Basics: Offsite Optimization for Search Engine rankings

Link Building

Link building is the most important aspect of Search Optimization (SEO). Infact it is more important that you think. I will be right to say link building is 95% important to your search engine ranking than anything else you think of, even more important than the much talked about Keyword Density!
So if you really want to rank for a keyword, get as many links as possible on it.

Ways to Build Links to your Site

Web Directories

One of the best ways to get links to your site is to submit your web address or URL to web directories. There are thousands of free web directories that you can submit to. The more directories you submit to, the more links you would get to your site. The more links you get, the higher your chances of ranking higher in search engines

Article Directories

Post articles to article directories with a link in the resource box back to your site.

Press Releases

If you are submitting a press release ensure you link back to your site

Trade Links

Trade links with people, especially with those with related keywords to yours. The easiest way to do this is to promise visitors something in return for linking to you, say a free advert space on your blog.

If you provide very strong content on your site, you will naturally get free one way links from readers who find your content informative and interesting.
I always link to most of the contents I read that impress me. So that is what you too will get if you can provide very strong content every now and then. Your search engine ranking will be greatly increased when people start linking to you.

Add your link to your forum signature file and discussion boards. Try to contribute every now and them so you don’t get banned from the forum.

How to Build Quality Links

Inbound Links: Inbound links are links coming from directories or other websites to your home or web pages. This links are usually hyperlink of your web address from other website. To make this link a quality link and increase your search engine ranking, you want to make sure you use your links carry the keyword you want to get rank for

An example is if you wish to rank for a keyword you should use it as your hyperlink or anchor text link instead of using your web address link like www.nvqmadesimple.com

Outbound Links: Outbound links are anchor text link from your page to other websites.

Outbound links helps your search engine ranking especially when you link out to a page related to your topic or subject matter.

Outbound links to authority sites also have value

Always make sure that any link you build carries the keyword you want to rank for.

When trading links with other websites owners, tell them the keyword you want them to use to link to you

If you want readers to use a particular keyword when linking to one of your posts, mention it below that post.

You could also give readers ideas of the keyword you want them to use in linking to you by using it in the title of the post.

HTML Tags for Search Engine Optimization

Tag Optimization

There are different HTML tags to be optimized with your keyword for search engine optimization. Some of these tags are very important, some are less important and others make no real difference in your search engine ranking.

The title tags are very important

Link tags are very important

Header tags are important

Alt and Meta tags are the least important

Title tag

Every page needs its own title tag. Your title tag must mention your primary keyword and perhaps one secondary keyword. It should be a single sentence of your keyword (s) and what your page is about and not listed like keywords.

Your title tag is what is displayed on your browser as the title for that page and it is extremely important in search engine ranking.
If you use a wordpress blog, this is automatically done for you as long as you have your keyword in that post title but if you use blogger, make sure you have your keyword (s) in the blog title.

Header tag

There are 6 types of header tags h1 – h6, the one you don’t want to ignore is h1. H1 must carry your keyword. You could also use h2 and h3 for each page you want to rank for. H2 and h3 should carry your secondary keywords

Link tag

This is used when linking to a page within your site or other websites. It is called the link tag or anchor text. Having your keyword in your link tags gives it more quality and is usually the most essential part of search engine ranking. If you doubt this ask Court he has been able to prove that the most important part of SEO optimization or the determining factor of how well you rank in search engines is quality link building using keyword anchor text.
If you want to rank for a keyword say SEO optimization then get a lot of anchor text link on that keyword and see what happens to your ranking.

Alt tag

This alt tag is used to describe an image in a page.
The alt tag is the least important in SEO. Infact it is not considered by some search engines at all because they are easily spammed. But it is good to still have this tag optimized with keywords because:

It is the text that is displayed when someone hovers around your image or when your image doesn’t display for some reasons.

The alt tag also allow for proper validation of your web pages

Some search engines still consider the alt tag for it ranking

To optimize the alt tag without spamming it use your keyword phrase instead of your main keyword, keyword phrase should not be more than 2 keyword terms and it should be in a word or sentence like ‘Tag optimization’ or ‘How to effectively optimize your HTML tags’

Meta Tag

This tag used to have a strong influence on search engine ranking until people started spamming it and search engines started giving it less importance. But it is still considered for search engine ranking. When optimizing your meta tag, endeavor not to spam it.
Follow these guidelines

Keyword meta tag

Use a keyword phrase instead of a single keyword

The keyword phrase (s) you use should be on your page

Use comma to separate each keyword phrase

Description Meta tag

Use keyword phrases in your description

Each page should have its own description

Your description should not just be full of keyword phrases but must make sense.
Most search engines display the first 160 characters so you should have your keyword phrases in your first 160 characters.

The above tags are the tags necessary for search engine optimization and if you optimize these tags properly when posting to your site it can increase your chance of ranking high in search engines

To get a practical idea of how tag optimization is done, search for your keyword in google and click on some of the sites displayed on the first page and check out its source (HTML)

SEO Basics – Web Page Optimization for Search Engine Ranking

Onsite Optimization

Web page or onsite optimization is a way of applying search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to a website.

Onsite optimization is about how you structure your entire web pages around your keyword. The main aspect of a web page optimization is the HTML tags and content, both should be well optimized with your keywords

Steps to Onsite SEO optimization

When setting out on web optimization you have to first be sure of the keywords you want to use for optimizing your web page

Identify your Keyword

This requires you brainstorm, when you are sure of the niche you want to major in, ask yourself if you were to search for information around that niche in search engines what keyword will you use? When you come up with a keyword then use Google Keyword Research Tool to break down that keyword and see related keywords

You want to make sure that your keyword has reasonable amount of visitors every month but with no much competition. You can download the SEO Firefox to analyze your competition (there are videos to teach you how to use it), if your competition on the first page of google search results is page rank 3 and above (PR3 and above) and your blog is new without page rank, then do not bother going after such keyword. Use google free keyword tool to know the number of people that searches for your keyword every month. You want to ensure that you don’t go for keywords with too much competition but with reasonable amount of search volume. Go with keywords with at least 3,000 monthly search volume but not above 5000 search volume.

Longer keywords (keyword phrases with three or more keyword terms) have less competition than a single or two word terms keywords

Optimize HTML Tags with your Keywords

This is a very important step in onsite web page optimization. I will discuss in my next article the various HTML tags to optimize but the most important ones are the URL of your site, page title meta data and page text.

If you use a wordpress blog, installed the ALL-in-One-SEO (if you haven’t, please do), and fill out the section with the necessary keywords when making a post to your site, your page title is automatically optimized for you.

Content Optimization

Create unique content that target your keywords.

To optimize your page content for search engines, make sure you repeat your keywords as often and reasonable as possible. You do not want to be seen as spamming your keywords else you would be penalized.
Use related keywords and some other text when optimizing your content. The goal of onsite SEO optimization is to market your keyword so that search engines can immediately know what your site is about when they visit your blog to index it. Keyword density should be between 3-5% of your entire content. But while marketing your keyword make it sound and flow naturally with your content.

Do not use more than 3 keywords in a single page

It will do you some good to have your keyword in the first and last sentences of your blog post, especially the first two sentences at the beginning of your post should contain your keywords

Search engines rank content higher based on keywords on the title of the page, link texts, and close to start of the content.

Court gave a practical example of Web Page Optimization

Offsite keyword optimization is the main factor that determines how well you are ranked in search engines. My next article will discuss how to get and build quality links to your site.

Blogging Tips – Steps to Effective Blogging

Steps to Successful Blogging

Choose a niche market

Before choosing a niche you need to really understand what you want from your blog and the group you want to target. To maximize profit from blogging, you want to be sure that your niche has a reasonable amount of traffic (people searching for it). Brainstorm on the problems people need answers to. When you come up with a niche then break it down into a smaller niche by using a keyword research tool Google Free Research Tool is just perfect if you can’t avoid a paid service yet.
Some topics that can never go out of market are: work at home businesses (internet businesses), effective internet marketing tools, employment and health.

Open your mind, and think broadly. What ideas and articles can you come up with to solve readers’ problems?

Put your information together in form of articles or e-book and give it free on your blog.

When given free e-book or software on your blog, make sure you have a lead page where you can build leads by asking readers to fill their names and emails in a form to get their free gift.

Building a list is necessary because it is easier to sell to old customers than new ones since they already showed interest in your free book, the chance that they will buy a product you later present to them relating to the content of the free gift you gave them is high.

Ensure to use keywords in high demand (but not too much competition) and optimize your blog and articles with those key words so your blog has a better chance of ranking well in search engines.

Update your blog regularly. Try to make a new post on your blog once everyday or twice a week, so that search engines will be updated with regular fresh contents and your readers will always get valuable information whenever they visit your blog.

Maximize search engine’s exposure; fill categories with the right keywords to ensure quality set of keywords.

To ensure quality information for your readers, always moderate the comments on your blog and enable the built-in spam filter on your blog.
